I did a one-year postdoc as member of the research unit at Hammel Neurorehabilitation Centre. I came back to AAU as Assistant Professor, and after three years in the position I joined UNEEG medical A/S as Technical Product Manager.
In my current position, I bridge the gap between product management and data science research within the organization. In my role, I facilitate collaboration across teams to deliver innovative solutions for epilepsy monitoring.
What do you use from your PhD education/training?
From my PhD education, I use research and analytical skills (systematic literature review, hypothesis testing, data analysis), critical thinking, technical communication (academic writing, oral presentations), cross-disciplinary teamwork, and a lot of resilience. I was also lucky enough to find a company where I could employ the domain-specific knowledge and methodologies I acquired during my PhD, but this is not the norm.
Did you miss something during your PhD?
At the time I did my PhD, the focus was mostly on work within academia. There was little understanding of what could be done outside.
Do you find that a PhD degree is a good starting point for a career outside academia?
I think that the PhD gives invaluable tools that can be used outside academia, but it is important to identify such skills, be flexible and adapt them to a different context that does not necessarily is related to the specific domain one has worked with during the PhD education.
